Complete bunkum, utter rubbish. a tunnel is some thing that is dug as an access way or working/heading, it has a start but may not have an open end.

It bugs me too when these reporters say shafts when they mean drifts: a shaft is vertical access to a deep mine as in UK where “cages” lower men down deep shafts to the workings. In USA most deep mines are drift mines under mountains. In UK “tunnels” are called “roadways” or “gates” . Coal is won on longwall faces accessed by 2 or 3 gates, or from “stalls” in “headings” – dead-end roadways.

Yeah I hate it when they call it a tunnel also. A tunnel needs to come out somewhere to be called that.
My Great Aunt Dorkus and Uncil Bill own the land that the miners came out on. they live in pensolvanya and live on a farm. i was there for the week on Vction and it was scarry watching them dig a big hole and 3 days later them comming out.
